IAC Acoustics Slimshield™ Acoustic Louvers & Noishield® Barrier Panels in MN Public Schools

The Problem

The Minneapolis Public School District in Minneapolis, Minnesota installed large, air-cooled chillers at three of its urban schools, Bryn Mawr Elementary, Olson Middle School, and Windom Community School, to improve both the air quality and temperature within each building. While these goals were achieved, a different problem had to be solved: the compressors within the units were predicted to emit noise outputs exceeding the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) noise control guidelines. To achieve state compliance, a noise mitigation strategy was employed.

The Solution

IAC Acoustics partnered with O’Neill Engineered Systems, an IAC exclusive representative, to find the right solution. Because the air chillers were rooftop mounted at two locations, consideration had to be given as to how to provide additional allowance for airflow into these chiller units. The solution for Bryn Mawr and Windom came in the form of IAC low-profile Model SL-6 acoustic louvers. An added benefit of this particular product is its ability to create a pleasing aesthetic visual screen covering the mechanical equipment. This location was able to utilize a 4" IAC Noishield Model TNG barrier panel with an anti-graffiti powder coat finish to achieve the desired sound reduction.

The Results

IAC and O’Neill provided an effective noise control solution that allows the chiller units to operate 24/7 in compliance with local noise ordinances. The added aesthetics benefit both the building occupants and neighboring homes and businesses.
